The Peruvian desert coast may appear devoid of huge fauna until you explore the nearby waters. Marine diversity is supported by the vast Pacific Ocean and its small islands. Everything from sea lions to penguins congregate on the Ballestas Islands, making for one of the greatest wildlife-spotting places in the country.
The Ballestas Islands (also known as Islas Ballestas) are a short boat journey from Paracas and are home to marine species such as Humboldt penguins, Guanay cormorants, Blue Footed Boobies, and sea lions. These islands are the primary magnet for visitors to the Paracas National Reserve.
The Humboldt Current, a low salinity ocean current, creates an ideal environment for the animal residents of the Ballestas Islands and the adjacent Paracas Peninsula. The cold Humboldt current draws water up from the ocean floor, bringing lower temperatures as well as nutrients to the top. These unique circumstances produce an optimal feeding zone for fish, attracting bigger predators, such as penguins, as a result.
During this half day trip, you will explore the fascinating rock formations of the Ballestas Islands. You will visit the natural habitat of the marine animals of the coast of Peru. This is one of the most beautiful day tours available in Peru. A visit to the Ballestas Islands is something that cannot be skipped while traveling to South America.
