Huchuy Qosqo Trek 2 Days – Huchuy Qosqo Hike

0
Overview

Huchuy Qosqo is an Inca archaeological site located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, north of Cusco city. It is situated at an altitude of 3600 meters (11811 feet) above sea level. “Huchuy Qosqo” is a Quechua expression that means “little Cusco”. However, according to some chroniclers, the real name of the site was “Kakya Qawani”.

According to Pedro Cieza de Leon, Huchuy Qosqo was built under the reign of Inca Wiraqocha, in the mid XV century. Huchuy Qosqo features numerous buildings. The main building is a Kallanka, a large rectangular structure made of stone and mud bricks. There are also some stone terraces that surround the site.

Huchuy Qosqo probably was an Inca royal state. After the Spanish conquest, the area surrounding Huchuy Qosqo was repurposed to grow maize, potatoes, and quinoa. Most of the original buildings of this site slowly crumbled and disappeared with the passing of time.

Nowadays, Huchuy Qosqo still retains its original beauty. The area where this archeological site is located is perfect for getting spectacular views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. During our 2 day trek, you will be exploring a relatively unknown path to the Huchuy Qosqo ruins. You will be hiking among the incredible valleys of the Andes mountains.

We recommend spending some days in Cusco city before attempting this trek. By doing this, you will help your body to acclimate and avoid suffering from altitude sickness.

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 7:30 am. Then, we will drive to Tambomachay, a small archeological center located near Cusco city. According to some historians, Tambomachay was an Inca temple dedicated to the water. The start point of the Huchuy Qosqo Trek is located in Tambomachay. After preparing our trekking equipment we will start our adventure.

We will hike from Tambomachay to the beautiful Qoricocha Lagoon. This lagoon is located at 4020 meters (13188 feet) above sea level. According to local legends, when the Spanish arrived in Cusco, the Inca priests threw numerous religious idols made of gold to the lagoon. For this reason, the lagoon was named Qoricocha, which translated from Quechua means “golden lagoon”.We will stop near Qoricocha to have lunch.

After having lunch, we will hike to our campsite located in Patabamba town. Along the route, you will get incredible views of the snow capped mountains that surround the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Once at Patabamba, we will have dinner and prepare our tents to spend the night.

Then, we will hike to the famous archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo. Once we arrive there, you will have a guided tour of the site. You will explore the Kallanka and the numerous Inca ruins scattered around the place.

After the tour, we will descend for around 2 hours to Lamay town, which is located at 2800 meters (9186 feet) above sea level. Once there, we will transfer you back to the city of Cusco. You will be arriving there around 7:00 pm.
